I assume my guess about Avast icons was off the mark. But do keep an eye on this thread in case Farvatten posts as he's the one with direct experience of Avast being mentioned in SFC errors.

    Thanks for the rep,

You gave me an idea Denis so I looked everywhere with "Everything", (pun intended), and opened every single file I could through the whole machine but found zilch. Did the DISM, chkdsk and SFC thing a dozen times but Avast still shows up in SFC as an "unable to fix" or words to that effect. The comp is running well, got no glaring problems so not going to worry about it.

This is a shot in the dark but did you make use of any Avast icons by allocating them as the icons for shortcuts that you created to any Windows components such as Disk management?
I've seen reports of that causing irreparable SFC errors before. @Farvatten
Thanks for thinking of me.. ;o)

However I've never used Avast AV products.

That said, you were correct that I did have SFC corruption errors whenever I chose to [Change Icon] under the Properties Tab of System supplied Short-cuts, such as 'Disk Management' and others that appear within the Start Menu's 'Windows Accessories' and 'Windows Administrative Tools' folders.

And with Windows, we've both learned it never hurts to shoot in the dark.

I tried to find some of my old posts on the topic and yet it appears they've aged out.

    Farvatten,

I was thinking of your post #69 in a 2019 thread.
I thought I checked that it mentioned Avast [when I first mentioned you last week] but looking again now I can see that it does not.
I seem to have lost my link to the SFC thread that did mention Avast in its list of irreparables.

    Yours in confusion,
    Denis

    Iffaor,

I was obviously going mad when I imagined Farvatten's old post.

So my only remaining suggestion is:-

Personally, I'd try a Repair install in your situation but only because I could not think of anything more logical to do. Despite its name, it is a repair operation not an installation. Repair Install - TenForumsTutorials
It doesn't take long to run a Repair install but downloading the Version 22H2 ISO file can be slow. Whilst it's always worth being cautious & making a new system image beforehand, a Repair install should never affect your installed applications or your own files and it hardly affects your chosen Windows settings [it used to be a real pig for this but has respected user choices for a couple of years now].

    Best of luck,
    Denis

Hey... you get extra credit for finding that old post of mine...!

I was disappointed when I came up empty on attempts at some pretty specific searches, plus my own 10 pages worth of post history only go back to 2021.
