For me if you have installed "MB" previously and removed it for some reason, even clearing the appdata, and user -> ( whatever those folders are called that stores programs and application information ) it should................ be able to install -->but upon restarting or shutting down it will revert to it's previous state and will not function. So clear any other folder ( including registry entries ) that is associated with "MB" before attempting to reinstall. In fact I believe there was a dedicated "Malewarebytes cleaner/remover/scrubber" that removes any if not all information, but I am sure of this existence anymore. You should also check if any other user accounts ( under the name of the program ) was created in the process of the original installation.

However during this I had a virus ( that mimicked programs and would start-up ).

I am using Avast Premium Security with a "limit" of three machines installs now.

First, let's see if the simplest solution works.

Please download the official offline installer from https://downloads.malwarebytes.com/file/mb5_offline. Then, restart Windows and try to install again.

Please let the forum know how it went.

    Thank you.

    Good.
I was using the online installer.

    Will report back soon.

Also, how did you find it on that site?

Yes. Normally, the online installer's baked-in and abundant security checks will often work on an adequately clean system and is highly recommended.

Also, how did you find it on that site?

Malwarebytes' helpers collect many MBAM tidbits bookmarked/stored because that installer is frequently needed.

The FAQs, and support site articles, are being rewritten but, your solution could have been more easily found by opening an appropriate topic on the Malwarebytes' Forum or opening a trouble ticket with the help desk.

    I'm scanning now. Thanks.

    You're welcome.

No big problems found (or expected) scanning.
I'm on the free version and set up to scan manually for now, but seriously considering the full version.
